    Solutions of Fractional Konopelchenko-Dubrovsky and Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov Equations Using a Generalized Fractional Subequation Method

    A new generalized fractional subequation method based on the relationship of fractional coupled equations is proposed. This method is applied to the space-time fractional coupled Konopelchenko-Dubrovsky equations and Nizhnik-Novikov-Veselov equations. As a result, many exact solutions are obtained including hyperbolic function solutions, trigonometric function solutions, and rational solutions. It is observed that the proposed approach provides a simple and reliable tool for solving many other fractional coupled differential equations

    Regulatory effect of resveratrol on the expressions of factors and surface markers in alveolar macrophages of Aspergillus fumigatus-infected COPD rat model, and the associated mechanism

    Purpose: To study the influence of resveratrol on chronic obstruction in Aspergillus fumigatus infection-induced chronic lung disease (COPD) in rats, and the process involved. Methods: Seventy-five Sprague Dawley SD) rats were assigned to blank control, COPD model, Aspergillus fumigatus-infected COPD model, low (100 mg/kg) and high-dose (200 mg/kg) resveratrol groups, with 15 rats in each group. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to assay IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF), while lung protein concentrations of AMPK and PGC-1α were assayed by immunoblotting. Results: In low- and high-dose resveratrol groups, inflammatory factor levels were significantly lower than the corresponding levels in COPD model and Aspergillus fumigatus-infected COPD model (p < 0.05), while lung tissue proteins of AMPK, PGC-1α, and AQP5 of the rats given high-dose resveratrol were significantly raised, relative to corresponding levels in rats given low-dose resveratrol (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Resveratrol modulates expression levels of secretory factors and surface markers in alveolar macrophages in COPD model rats infected with Aspergillus fumigatus. Resveratrol exerts this effect through the regulation of AMPK/PGC-1α signaling pathway

    Involvement of NADH Oxidase in Biofilm Formation in Streptococcus sanguinis

    Biofilms play important roles in microbial communities and are related to infectious diseases. Here, we report direct evidence that a bacterial nox gene encoding NADH oxidase is involved in biofilm formation. A dramatic reduction in biofilm formation was observed in a Streptococcus sanguinis nox mutant under anaerobic conditions without any decrease in growth. The membrane fluidity of the mutant bacterial cells was found to be decreased and the fatty acid composition altered, with increased palmitic acid and decreased stearic acid and vaccenic acid. Extracellular DNA of the mutant was reduced in abundance and bacterial competence was suppressed. Gene expression analysis in the mutant identified two genes with altered expression, gtfP and Idh, which were found to be related to biofilm formation through examination of their deletion mutants. NADH oxidase-related metabolic pathways were analyzed, further clarifying the function of this enzyme in biofilm formation

    Postpartum practices of puerperal women and their influencing factors in three regions of Hubei, China

    BACKGROUND: 'Sitting month' is a Chinese tradition for women's postpartum custom. The present study aims to explore the postpartum dietary and health practices of puerperal women and identify their influential factors in three selected regions of Hubei, China. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in the selected urban, suburban and rural areas in the province of Hubei from 1 March to 30 May 2003. A total of 2100 women who had given birth to full-term singleton infants in the past two years were selected as the participants. Data regarding postpartum practices and potentially related factors were collected through questionnaire by trained investigators. RESULTS: During the puerperium, 18% of the participants never ate vegetables, 78.8% never ate fruit and 75.7% never drank milk. Behaviour taboos such as no bathing, no hair washing or teeth brushing were still popular among the participants. About half of the women didn't get out of the bed two days after giving birth. The average time they stayed in bed during this period was 18.0 h. One third of them didn't have any outdoor activities in that time periods. The educational background of both women and their spouses, location of their residence, family income, postnatal visit, nutrition and health care educational courses were found to be the influencing factors of women's postpartum practices. CONCLUSION: Traditional postpartum dietary and health behaviours were still popular among women in Hubei. Identifying the factors associated with traditional postpartum practices is critical to develop better targeting health education programs.     Spherical Message Passing for 3D Graph Networks

    We consider representation learning from 3D graphs in which each node is associated with a spatial position in 3D. This is an under explored area of research, and a principled framework is currently lacking. In this work, we propose a generic framework, known as the 3D graph network (3DGN), to provide a unified interface at different levels of granularity for 3D graphs. Built on 3DGN, we propose the spherical message passing (SMP) as a novel and specific scheme for realizing the 3DGN framework in the spherical coordinate system (SCS). We conduct formal analyses and show that the relative location of each node in 3D graphs is uniquely defined in the SMP scheme. Thus, our SMP represents a complete and accurate architecture for learning from 3D graphs in the SCS. We derive physically-based representations of geometric information and propose the SphereNet for learning representations of 3D graphs. We show that existing 3D deep models can be viewed as special cases of the SphereNet. Experimental results demonstrate that the use of complete and accurate 3D information in 3DGN and SphereNet leads to significant performance improvements in prediction tasks.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, 8 table

    Requirement for DNA Ligase IV during Embryonic Neuronal Development

    The embryonic ventricular and subventricular zones (VZ/SVZ) contain the neuronal stem and progenitor cells and undergo rapid proliferation. The intermediate zone (IZ) contains nonreplicating, differentiated cells. The VZ/SVZ is hypersensitive to radiation-induced apoptosis. Ablation of DNA non-homologous end-joining (NHEJ) proteins, XRCC4 or DNA ligase IV (LigIV), confers ataxia telangiectasia mutated (ATM)-dependent apoptosis predominantly in the IZ. We examine the mechanistic basis underlying these distinct sensitivities using a viable LigIV (Lig4(Y288C)) mouse, which permits an examination of the DNA damage responses in the embryonic and adult brain. Via combined analysis of DNA breakage, apoptosis, and cell-cycle checkpoint control in tissues, we show that apoptosis in the VZ/SVZ and IZ is activated by low numbers of DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs). Unexpectedly, high sensitivity in the VZ/SVZ arises from sensitive activation of ATM-dependent apoptosis plus an ATM-independent process. In contrast, the IZ appears to be hypersensitive to persistent DSBs. NHEJ functions efficiently in both compartments. The VZ/SVZ and IZ regions incur high endogenous DNA breakage, which correlates with VZ proliferation. We demonstrate a functional G(2)/M checkpoint in VZ/SVZ cells and show that it is not activated by low numbers of DSBs, allowing damaged VZ/SVZ cells to transit into the IZ. We propose a novel model in which microcephaly in LIG4 syndrome arises from sensitive apoptotic induction from persisting DSBs in the IZ, which arise from high endogenous breakage in the VZ/SVZ and transit of damaged cells to the IZ. The VZ/SVZ, in contrast, is highly sensitive to acute radiation-induced DSB formation
